Recently, Fabio Comana – Director of Continuing Education at NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) was in town to deliver 2 workshops – the Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) & the Youth Exercise Specialist (YES).

“EXERCISE IS MEDICINE ” … This is the reason behind CES. More and more people these days have muscular imbalances, rehabilitation concerns and musculoskeletal impairments. This is due to an increase in sedentary lifestyles, lack of physical activity and occurrences of accidents and surgery.

Thus there is a growing need for fitness professionals to learn how to combat and deal with these issues. In the course, Fabio integrated sciences and the solutions for injury prevention and recovery success.

For example, use an overhead squat to check for imbalances … When your client does an overhead squat, do her knees buckle inward ? Do her knees stay aligned with her toes ? Does her trunk lean too much forward ?

If so then maybe her adductors are tight and she would need to stretch them. Or that her core is not strong enough and she needs to strengthen it.

Traditional exercise program design consisting of warming up, cardio, strength and stretching is giving way to a new emerging trend of program design.

First we stretch the tight muscles and activate the weak ones. This can be done via myofascial release or ( in absence of equipment ) static stretching. The consequence of not doing so is that weak muscles are weakened further and over active muscles keep getting stronger – leading to injury happening as a matter of time !

Here’s what some of the participants had to say about CES …

“In ACE, we were taught about movement but with Fabio I learned how to deal with someone with injuries, what to look for and about dysfunctional movement”

I gained more knowledge thanks to Fabio’s clear concise explanation and demonstration”

“I learned A LOT ! Now I can integrate what I’ve learnt in ACE & NASM to train and progress clients in their respective objectives”

“Fabio’s voice and class still stays with me till today. His depth of knowledge is inspiring and we are lucky to have the opportunity to learn from him.”

“WOW ! A lot of great ideas on how to train youth. I also know about limitations, precautions and guidelines for training them now”

“I learnt so much – from nutrition and hydration, to physiology, pyschology and the emotions of training youth. Also we learnt so many games to target different skills such as power, agility and speed”
