Do I really need to be certified?
Many people debate on the need of getting certified. Majority sees the need in this (well done!) while there are groups who disagree and some in denial. Those disagree feel certification is a waste of time as clients do not really care about this issue. Some fitness leaders and personal trainers think that getting certified will not provide immediate revenue, so why bother. They would prefer to learn how use the latest fitness gadgets as that might spark IMMEDIATE interest in their client. Some claim mastery through fitness certification and some debate on superiority of their services through certification.
Maybe we should first explore how you may benefit from getting certified and you make the call…
What is Personal Trainer Certification?
A personal trainer certification shows that you have minimum competency to design & implement a safe and effective exercise programme for apparently healthy adult. It does not proof mastery in this field. It is the beginning! Certification guides you to…
- Select appropriate exercise techniques
- Design a personalized & complete fitness programme for clients based on goals, preference, health condition, fitness level, lifestyle, attitudes and beliefs. A programme should always have sense of progression and regression.
- Coach clients through effective communication skills. E.g. building rapport, questioning & responding skills, goal setting, teaching techniques, motivation and how to provide feedback.
- Choose the most appropriate assessment tools, sequencing it in the right order and how to conduct the assessment in the most professional manner.
- Know your scope of practice, professional ethics and your legal responsibilies
How does personal trainer certification relates to job then?
The above are the basic skills that a personal trainer should KNOW on the very first day of their job. They need not be very skillful yet. Hopefully their fitness managers would be able to coach them (if they are trained!) Through repetitive job experience, their skills will be improved. Do continuing education courses, attend workshops/conventions and learn how to use new fitness gadgets and integrate it to your client’s fitness routine. Obtain feedback from your managers, clients and colleague.
So personal trainers, are you certified already?

Why choose the ACE certification?
ACE is one of the most recognised certification worldwide and it is accredited by NCCA. The International Health & Racquet Sports Association encourages their members to hire PT with NCCA accredited certification.
One of the best part of ACE is the Integrated Fitness Training Model which includes functional programming, functional assessment and performance training. This helps personal trainer to regress clients who are not able to exhibit good movement patterns and also help personal trainers to implement conditioning programme for clients with sports goals.
