Tell us more about yourself!
JH: 2 years ago, I was skinny and underweight. I wasn’t happy with the way I looked so I decided to start training myself and managed to gain 12kg by working out and following a proper diet. As I have great interested in nutrition and fitness, I decided to pursue Diploma in Physiotherapy to learn how to treat people with exercise.
W: I am from Mauritius and was a swimming coach back then. I was very much into sports and bodybuilding. Being influenced by my family members who are mostly in the healthcare industry, I decided to be a physiotherapist as it is a profession that incorporates healthcare and also my interest-fitness.
Why did you take the ACE Personal Trainer Course?
JH: I met Lip Qin in the university gym and he advised me to take the ACE certification when I told him my dream is to become a personal trainer to help others achieve their fitness goals. Furthermore, I had always wanted to learn correct technique of exercising. All this while, I have only learnt through my own research and friends in the gym.
W: I love to work out and I go to gym 3-4 times a week. Then, I met someone with the same passion when I was doing the physiotherapy course, Lip Qin. He did the ACE Personal Trainer Course with FiT and he started training me. I noticed a huge difference the way he trained me compare to the other trainers I see in commercial gym with unknown qualifications. I was very impressed and decided to take up the course. I believe having an internationally recognized Personal Trainer course will complement the degree I’m pursuing.

How did you find the prep course?
JH: The practical sessions were very helpful as I learnt new workouts. I realized some of the techniques I had been using were not as safe and effective and learnt proper form.
During the ACE PT Course!
W: With my background, it did not take me a long time to catch up, especially the anatomy and science chapters. Furthermore, being a regular exerciser, practical session was fun and informative.
How was the exam?
JH: It’s not about memorizing the textbook, but imagining yourself as a personal trainer in certain situations. You need to know how to apply theories you learnt in class and textbook.
W: I think 4hours to do the exam is too long! The questions weren’t too tough, but can be tricky.
Have you start training anyone?
JH: I would love to! I am now busy with my final semester exam. I would like to start personal training once I graduate.

W: I am currently training a few of my friends and I’ve just got hired as a trainer in a bootcamp. (Congrats!)
What are your plans in future?
JH: I would like to start by doing my practical exam in FiT and proceed to junior personal trainer. In future, I hope to set up my own business where I can provide home visit physiotherapy and personal training to people in need.
W: I’m looking into adding on to my credentials by earning more certifications. I’m interested in doing the Certified Sports Conditioning Specialist as I’m interested in training athletes and also Parkour Fitness Specialist. In future, I hope to go to Canada as sports and fitness is blooming there and it would be a great opportunity.
Any advice to your juniors?
JH: The ACE Personal Trainer Certification gave me comprehensive information on exercise. It’s essential as you can apply on post-rehabilitation and musculoskeletal dysfunction patient. And when your patient is fully recovered, you can help them further by providing personal training.
W: You learn things outside textbook. ACE is very much client oriented and it will definitely help us as healthcare professionals in our practice.
