‘Dieting is not a piece of cake’
But we all know it goes hand in hand with exercise to give you the perfect figure everyone wants.
A PERSONAL TRAINER is a fitness professional who helps people achieve fitness goals by providing exercise prescription and instruction.
A DIETITIAN is a professional trained in translating the science of food, nutrition and medical nutrition therapy to meet the needs of individual or target groups, whether in disease or health.
So does that mean I will have to work with a Personal Trainer and also a Dietitian to achieve my goals?
DIETITIANS are the experts in diet, nutrition and behavioural modification. It would be perfect if dietitians can do exercise programming as well!

FiT Malaysia was fortunate to be a part of the biggest annual conference for dietitians in the country and the gathering of dietitians, sports personnel, coaches, specialists and medical doctors.
We’ve met dietitians, personal trainers, medical doctor and health professionals. We were overwhelmed to find healthcare professionals showing keen interest in fitness.
One of them was Friedrich, who dropped by our booth and was lucky enough to win a FULL scholarship to do the ACE Personal Trainer Course in FiT Malaysia! And currently, he is in our July Full-Time intake. So, we had to grab this opportunity to talk to our new dietitian friend!
What brought you to our booth during the MDA conference?
FiT Malaysia isn’t new to me.. I’ve been looking around for a fitness certification around Sabah (Friedrich is a Clinical Dietitian in Hospital Keningau, Sabah – for 6 years!). I landed at FiT Malaysia’s page several time but it seems like a mission impossible for me to take off from work and fly to KL for the Personal Trainer Course. I was actually VERY excited to see FiT Malaysia in MDA!
How did the passion in fitness grow?
As dietitians, we are diet counselors, listeners and definitely role models to patients who seek our support. Therefore, I started working out in the gym 2-3 years ago to keep fit. However, I have problem training myself the right way. When I overdo it, and lost a lot of weight, patients say i look skinny; when I try to build muscle, they say I look chubby.. I don’t like it either way. So I started searching online for exercise programs and also techniques. I actually came across Jerrican teaching proper exercise techniques. I can’t believe I’m seeing him LIVE in class now haha!
What was your feeling when you know you won the scholarship?
Honestly, I was in a huge dilemma! I wanted the scholarship so much but I wasn’t sure if my superior will release me for a long leave. Fortunately, with my friend’s encouragement I decided to give it a try. I spoke to my chief dietitian and then the director. I was more than delight to receive a YES from the director. They were very supportive of me taking the ACE PT certification, with ONE condition. I have to pass the exam.. and bring what I learnt from FiT Malaysia back to Keningau. Well, we can see that many health care professionals are starting to realize the importance of exercise as a health intervention.
So, how did you find the class so far?
I’m enjoying it! I’m doing things I haven’t done before and learning things I always wanted to.
Watch Friedrich having fun in a circuit training during the ACE PT Course!
Are you thinking of becoming a Personal Trainer?
Definitely YES! I would have already be a Personal Trainer if there is Personal Trainer course in Sabah!! It’s the path that I always wanted to take. Upon graduation, I applied to become a Sports Dietitian in the Sports Council, however I decided to stick to clinical in the end. But the thought of becoming a Dietitian who is able to give exercise prescription is still flaming and I’m glad that I’m one step closer to my goal now!
