Ee Ling is one of our recent ACE Personal Trainer graduate with a very unique background.
Tell us more about yourself.
I did my degree in Nutrition and Dietetics in International Medical University and just graduated last year. I went on to pursue my ACE Personal Trainer Certification and I passed! I didn’t expect to pass because I was actually struggling in class not knowing what is a ‘lat-pulldown’ and which muscle is worked on when you do a seated row. Anyhow, it’s an encouragement for me to continue my path I’m on now.
Do you work out?
I don’t hit the gym regularly but I was active in sports ever since high school. I played netball and basketball for the school and was active in annual sporting events in my university. I was then very interested in sports nutrition and did my final year research in Institut Sukan Negara on national weightlifters. However, now that I’m working in FiT Malaysia and have a gym in the office, working out is very convenient and I have no more excuses not to workout (anymore!).
Most people think that dietitians eat perfectly. Is that true?
NO!! Some people think we eat fruits and vegetable 3 meals a day and doesn’t know how pizza and soda taste like. We are just like anyone else; We enjoy food! Many people misunderstood that when they see a dietitian, we are going to take away food from their diet. That’s not true. We assess your needs and suggest modifications to achieve a balance meal.
Why did you take up the ACE Personal Trainer Certification Course?
When I just graduated, I wasn’t sure what I really want as a career. Before I heard from my friend who was doing a PT course, I didn’t know that you can actually study about fitness. I thought it was a great idea because I always wanted to know more about exercise and fitness.
How does doing the ACE PT course helped you in your dietetic practice?
During my placement in hospitals and klinik kesihatan, we give dietetic counseling to patients. One of the management intervention is to advise patient to increase physical activity level. However, we always stop right there because we only know general guideline of exercising. I thought it wasn’t enough to help patients in achieving their health goals.
What are your plans for 2013?
I am enjoying my triple role in FiT Malaysia as a dietitian, personal trainer and also marketing executive. I would like to explore into fitness and sports nutrition. I have just completed my ACE Health Coach Exam last weekend and just can’t wait for the results! Doing the course helped me, as a health-care provider to understand clients/patients barrier to make behavior change. Providing constructive strategies to help them take personal control over their life by changing the way they eat, incorporating physical activities into their daily activities and ultimately to improve overall health and well-being. After this, I’ll be preparing for International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) Sports Nutrition Specialist Certification in order to specialize further in fitness and sports nutrition.
