So, what’s the story behind this person who contributed to the birth of Malaysia’s first international standard fitness education center, a prominent fitness educator in the region, Men’s Health Malaysia Fitness Advisor and a State Bodybuilding Judge – Jerrican Tan
Heard you were an auditor before? Tell us more.
Yes, for barely 6 months. Did a bad job as I didn’t like it and the job’s nature prevents me from exercising regularly and eating healthy on a consistent basis. Don’t ever get me to work in long sleeve shirt and tie again anymore. LOL
The change from audit to fitness instructor was intense from my family side. Initially they had strong reservation towards my move, but today, they are investing in FIT. Thanks papa and mummy! 🙂
Heard you worked in a commercial club before..? What was the best thing ever happened to you there?
Yup. It was Fitness First. I was lucky enough to be under the leadership of several great leaders like Dave, JJ, Julian, Louis and Wes. I was given a lot of opportunities for training and development.
Today, I can see there are many great leaders now in various fitness providers, they are out there!
So how did you start FiT Malaysia, what are the obstacles?
Thanks to my former employer, they sent me to the FIT PT Prep Course for ACE because I failed my ACE exam on my first attempt of self-study! (Oops :p) Within less than an hour of the course taught by Suzanne Hosley from FiT Thailand, I said to myself `This is what I want to do – `Fitness Education’ for the rest of my life. In less than 2 years from that moment, I ran FiT Malaysia! My biggest challenge was how to put fitness, business, education and Malaysia together. In fact, the challenge turned into passion! Now, I wake up every morning feeling the purpose of my existence.
The FiT Malaysia Team!
If there is a Time Machine, would you travel back in time, and do something else besides FIT?
Nope, instead I will travel forward again as I am having what I wished for.
What is your advice on people making career change?
Train yourself or hire a certified PT, do the preparation course by FIT (at least you learn how to do it – in PT it is not only about how much you know), get yourself certified and get a good mentor to coach you. The mentor must believe performance is based on quality of service provision and marketing and NOT just effective sales script. Never stop learning; getting certified is the beginning and not the end. Get people (clients, mentor, friends…etc) to provide you feedback.
June and Ee Ling had fun unveiling Jerrican’s secret :p

Believe is my weapon of mass construction!’
