We’ve been interviewing so many fitness professionals but we realize that we’ve missed out ONE person!!
‘He’s a walking fitness encyclopedia!..’
‘I will never fall asleep in his class..’
‘Everything that comes out from his mouth seems funny?..’
‘When I see him, I can’t help but to ask him about fitness-related questions!’
These are things people say about him..
So, what’s the story behind this person who contributed to the birth of Malaysia’s first international standard fitness education center, a prominent fitness educator in the region, Men’s Health Malaysia Fitness Advisor and a State Bodybuilding Judge – Jerrican Tan
Tell us 3 things that we do not know/misunderstand about you?
Hahaha!! I prefer to keep those to myself.. It’s fun!
Did you grow up knowing that you ll be in the fitness industry?
Definitely not! I was a chubby kid then turn skinny (my height was 180cm @ 67kg). I was never confident or bright, never athletic and never heard of healthy eating!
No joke! I was really stick thin back then.
How did you get started?
When I was 7, I passed by a gym and was fascinated by how people manage to lift those heavy weights. I begged my parents to let me join the gym but because I was too young so I will stand outside just to watch people train.
Finally at the age of 16, my friend invited me to workout with him at the gym. From that moment onwards, It was the point of no return and I went full force. A group of bodybuilding friends influenced me to compete in the junior category for local bodybuilding when I was 17. That got me addicted and pushed me to my national junior title in year 2001, placed 6th in Asia on year 2002, local open heavyweight title in year 2002 and placed 4th in national open heavyweight title in year 2003.
All my bodybuilding training happened when I was studying for my accounting degree. Honestly speaking, I spent more time cooking, eating and training than my studies. Given my bad genetics in bodybuilding and the urge to stay clean of drugs, I went extra mile to find out the best exercise and nutrition programming method. Due to the intense myth about exercise going around, I had to question every `tip’ given to me. I learnt to ask WHY!
I was given the honor by my university to run the fitness club there for 4 years. Best thing was, I ran a couple of workshops every year on weight training techniques, body transformation and nutrition. My love and passion in educating people about fitness eventually grew.
