You are an engineering graduate…Tell us how you started your fitness career

At the time, It was never meant to be a career. I picked up fitness training whilst in college and being an engineer, it make me curious on how fitness, nutrition, supplements etc work. So it really started out of self-interested … I took my certification (again for self-interest) in the US, came back to Malaysia to honor my scholarshop (well had no choice really) and was looking for ways to make a lil more on the side. So long story short, my fitness career began as a contributing writer for Men’s Health Malaysia.

What’s your concept of keeping fit and healthy?

It all about balance (not perfection) and a never ending pursuit of happiness. I am not competing against any one but myself.

We understand you are one of the pioneers of fitness in Malaysia. What do you think about how the fitness industry has evolved ever since you started?

Social media has taken over. it is a lot easier these days to reach out to 1000s or even millions or people through social media. The other trend I see if that people understand that fitness is not tied to a gym … its everywhere … its a lifestyle.

What do you think makes a good personal trainer?

Really hard to say as a personal trainer can be good or bad on many levels. I work with many trainers. I appreciate those who are sincere, driven, highly motivated and are NOT syok sendiri.

Please comment on the relevance and importance of certification for personal trainer?

I have nothing against certification. It really depends on what or where a personal trainer wants to work. It does not guarantee success or failure … but you cant call yourself a personal trainer without proper certification. Every PT must have some form of certification to enter the market.

Ok, tell us the objectives of Jom Kurus. Vision as well?

It is a 6 week weight loss challenge to help an overweight individual to take control of their lives, lose weight and apply that knowledge way beyond the 6 week program. It emphasises on education (proper nutrition and exercise) … the vision is simple: we want to make it succcessful in Malaysia, touch as many people as we can and make it into a regional or perhaps global brand.

What benefits do people get when becoming team leaders?

Depends on what you are looking for. Aside from the real life experience, many trainers benefit from the exposure of being part of probably the biggest weight loss competition in Malaysia. Aside from that the “kepuasan” (satisfaction) of really making a difference so people’s life is an amazing feeling, it exposes team leaders to a different ways to diversify their income.
