It all started from a fitness forum & fitness career talk in University Malaya.

The need for Personal Trainers has been increasing over the years in Malaysia, hence the increase of people pursuing a career in the fitness industry.  Sport Science graduates are eager to enhance their job competencies and marketability, especially in the personal training industry.

The deputy director (undergraduate) Sports Centre, Dr. Lim Boon Hooi and the Managing Director or FIT Malaysia, Jerrican Tan carefully went through the Sports Science curriculum and designed a Personal Trainer (ACE) course for the UM Sports Science final year undergraduates and graduates.

April 11th, 2014 marked the first UM and FIT Malaysia collaborated PT (ACE) workshop. We have a total of 20 UM Sports Science undergraduates and graduates that attended this workshop in order to prepare themselves for the ACE Personal Trainer Certification.

We are happy to have 5 of the undergraduates/ graduates to share with us their experience learning from FiT Malaysia.

Thanks to Eng Chun Yik (Yik), Alex Mah (Alex), Wee Liam, Soheil (Soheil), Sai Eu Gin (Eu Gin) and Jackson.

1. Tell us your learning experience in Fit Malaysia during the ACE PT Pro Grade workshop.

Alex: This is a true practical approach of learning. I enjoyed learning through this channel and indeed today workshop is very heavy for me. It would be good to separate it into few days. However, I learnt a lots and I felt the time passed so fast during the workshop!

Soheil: It is intense and express but very detailed. In university, we learnt in very academic manner, whereas in FIT, it is so much practical.

Wee Liam: This is a very short course, but I felt so much benefited from the course, especially on the contents, they are more current, up to date and relevant to the fitness industry. I strongy recommend  people who want to be a personal trainer to go for ACE PT course with FiT Malaysia, it lays a very good foundation and provide so much training tools for a personal trainer.

Eugin: It was a refreshing new experience. I re- and visited many aspects of exercise techniques, I appreciate the most on stretching and self myofascial release from Jerrican (the educator).

Jackson: I learnt a lots about posture deviation and how to correct client’s posture. This is awesome!

2. Tell us one or more new thing(s) you’ve learn in our ACE PT Pro Grade workshop?

Wee Liam: I learnt how to apply the knowledge in real life, and the signature ACE’s IFT Model.

Jackson: I have attended Gym Instructor course in FiT Malaysia some times ago, compare to that and my academic, the new thing that I have learn was stability and mobility movements.

Yik: I learnt how to perform exercise in a proper way and how it reduces the chance of getting injuries.

Soheil: Corrective exercise component.  And I enjoyed learning the stability and mobility movement training the most.

Alex: Application. I know and understand sports science but I always find it challenging and difficult to connect the dots between practical and theory. Jerrican and Hafizzat (the educators) are very details in “show, tell, and do” on all the practical components. This helps me to clear many doubts.

Eu Gin: Varieties of active stretching and the test to find out a client’s VT1 and VT2

3. How this workshop will complement your current students (sport science/healthcare) and enhance your future offerings?

Eu Gin: I found it beneficial for my interest in sports and coaching. In the future I hope to be a coach or a personal trainer, I want to help athletes or people to achieve their fitness and performance goals.

Soheil: This workshop fine tune my exercise techniques. And I can speak confidently on the reason behind each and every exercise techniques. This indeed gives me a better confidence in conducting personal training session.

Wee Liam: I did this workshop for my own credential purpose and for own knowledge.

Yik: It made me understand more about the role of PT in fitness industry and it helped me decide my future career pathway after graduate from Sports Science.

Jackson: I am currently doing personal training already. This workshop freshen up my PT skills.

Alex: Through this workshop, it improved my understanding of fitness industry and personal trainer’s role.

4. Tell us more about yourself

Yik: I am currently still a student and I used to be a basketball district player. I am now considering to be a part time personal trainer. I heard it was good money. LOL

Alex: I am still studying Bachelor of  Degree in Sports Management in UM. I am also a nutrition consultant for a wellness centre. I am a basketball player and I representing the varsity basketball team. Frankly speaking, I took up the course just to get a cheaper ACE exam option (LOL). But after today workshop, I  understand that getting certified from ACE  is not just about passing the exam and make money from being an ACE certified PT,  a certified PT need be knowledgeable in fitness, able to handling clients based on their conditions and fitness goals, it was a huge responsibility. And I think it was a big challenge to conduct the correct assessment to find out clients’ need and their conditions. . I will definitely recommend this course to all my friends who intended to enter the fitness industry. For this intensive Pro Grade PT workshop, you need to have solid sports science background and you must love fitness. From this course, you know the “why” to conduct the “how”.

Soheil: I am a undergraduate of Sport Science degree student in UM and a trainer in Jatomi Fitness now. I am also a Karate black belt 2nd Dan , coach for  Malaysian Olyimps Association Conditionin. And, I want to work in World Health Organization as a health developer.

Wee Liam: My day job is a safety trainer for warehouse and offices. I am also a bootcamp coach.

Jackson: I am currently a personal trainer in the university and involve in this new sports named as Floorball. I am also a national rowing athlete. My next target is to take up NSCA CSCS, Sports Management and Malaysia Sport Science Cert Level 2 & 3.

Eu Gin: I might go into personal training career, probably as part time in a gym to get the feel of personal training. Then I might pursue NSCA CSCS, which is more of my interest, I like weightlifting and coaching team on sports performance.
